In I Even Funnier, Jamie is preparing for the semi-finals in Las Vegas for The Planet's Funniest Kid Comic Con
I received I Even Funnier a few weeks ago to review. At the time, I wasn't really sure if I would enjoy it or not, but after reading the first book I was feeling less weary towards it. I was worried that the I Funny books would be too "middle-grade" with immature humour and no depth, but I surprisingly enjoyed it! And in my opinion, the sequel to I Funny, I Even Funnier, was even better. In I Even Funnier, Jamie is preparing for the semi-finals in Las Vegas for The Planet's Funniest Kid Comic Contest, trying to ace his exams and trying to find his way through the obstacles in middle-school. I won't say much more, as it will give away the story.
I really like Jamie! In the first book I liked him, and in this book he grew on me even more. I think as the series continues I will grow to love him. He's a great friend and has a sweet personality and loves to make those around him laugh. There were quite a few instances in this book where he tells us how he misses his family who died in a car accident a few years ago and how he wishes he didn't have to be in a wheelchair. I hope that one day he can walk again, if he gets the required surgery. I would love it if James Patterson had that happen!
The supporting characters were fantastic too and I love I to learn more about their lives. I really sympathised with Gaynor when his mom got cancer and how he felt so useless and angry that his mom was sick. My mom has M.E./CFS and lately it's been bad again so I can completely understand how he feels. It was nice knowing that there was someone who I could kind of relate to in this book.
I also like Pierce and how he always has new facts to tell everyone. Gilda really grew on me in this book. She's a great friend and has such a unique personality. I like Cool Girl as well, she's sweet to Jamie and she seems like a down-to-earth, dependable person. I love Jamie's Uncle Frankie, you can clearly see the bond between the two and I love the way he encourages Jamie and all that he does for him. Jamie's adoptive family also grew on me in this book. You could see that they genuinely cared for and loved Jamie and they were being more active in his life. Even Stevie, the school bully and Joe's cousin, seemed nicer in the book.
This book also had depth to it, though. With Gaynor's mom being diagnosed with cancer and the way he reacted to that. As well as one of Jamie's family members having a health scare.
The one thing I didn't like about this book though, is that it was very similar to the first book and it also wasn't that funny. Whenever Jamie said what his next routine would include, his jokes weren't stuff that were particularly funny and I found it quite unlikely that people would have tears rolling down their faces from his jokes, as it was such random things that didn't seem like he was even trying to be funny. However, I do like Jamie and I am interested to see what will happen in the next book.
I Even Funnier is a cute story that I will appeal to a lot of middle-graders! It has lovely illustrations in it that goes a long with the story nicely. It's a fast-paced book with cute characters and humour that will probably appeal to younger children. I would recommend this series to middle-graders.

It goes something like this: every other page the narrator has to remind the reader how funny he is. And every other-other page he quotes/recites an actual famous/talented stand-up comic's bit. Me and my 10-year-olds found ourselves groaning more times than actually laughing.
And not only was this awful but Patterson was cruel enough to make this over 300 pages?! (The same time we were reading this we were also reading Rotten School #1 by RL Stine and he was able to deftly do what Patterson

Then he goes on to regionals and he finds out that he will have some really good competition. One of them was his favorite comic until today. He got really insulted by him so now he cannot say he is his favorite comic anymore.
Well he barely got past the first round that day by finishing in 6th place. But then with some encouragement he blew the house away. No one was even close to him. So with that he won that competition.
He prepares to go on to the Simi-finals. When he was with his Uncle he found some really funny jokes. Then on the way home his Uncle had a heart attack. So he could not go to the Simi-finals without him. So he had to call in that he could not make it.
Then one day he got a letter in the mail that he could go to the wild-card competition in Las Vegas. He told his guardians and they said yes. So he and his family went to the competition and found a way to win. He had never felt so proud in his life, not because he did it, but that he had his uncle see it.
I would totally recommend it to anyone who can read. The book helps people realize if you stick to your dreams they can come true. The characters in the book are his Uncle, Gilda, Stevie, Smiles, and Jamie. Jamie is in a wheelchair because of the wreck that caused the rest of his family's death.

I think the them is to never give up
This book was one of those where I remember the characters really well. I really enjoyed the story. The best part of the book – that no matter what happens, the characters don't give up. All the hardships the characters in the book go through make me care for them even more. The characters are believable middle school kids. Some of the story plot seems a bit sad, but it's really the kind of things kids have to go through every day. The humor in the book is hysterical and I had a few laugh out loud moments when I was reading it. I love Jamie's motto – "Laughter is the best medicine" :) Mr. Patterson and Mr. Grabenstein's writing style is enjoyable to read. The book is very appropriate for middle school age kids even though it deals with some sad topic. I think this book can inspire everyone to persevere and follow your dreams. I can't wait for the next book (I Funniest) to come out. :)
*NOTE I received an ARC copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

James Patterson is the world's bestselling author and most trusted storyteller. He has created more enduring fictional characters than any other novelist writing today, with his Alex Cross, Michael Bennett, Women's Murder Club, Private, NYPD Red, Daniel X, Maximum Ride, and Middle School series. He has sold over 380 million books worldwide and currently holds the Guinness World Record for the most #1 New York Times bestsellers. In addition to writing the thriller novels for which he is best known, among them The President Is Missing with President Bill Clinton, Patterson also writes fiction for young readers of all ages, including the Max Einstein series, produced in partnership with the Albert Einstein Estate. He is also the first author to have #1 new titles simultaneously on the New York Times adult and children's bestseller lists.
The son of an insurance salesman and a schoolteacher, Patterson grew up in Newburgh, New York, and began casually writing at the age of nineteen. In 1969, he graduated from Manhattan College. He was given a full-ride scholarship to Vanderbilt University's graduate program in English. He left Vanderbilt before getting his PhD due to complications involving the Vietnam War.
Instead, he moved to New York to become a junior copywriter for the advertising agency J. Walter Thompson, eventually becoming CEO of its North American company.
In 1976, while still working for J. Walter Thompson, Patterson published his first novel, The Thomas Berryman Number, with Little, Brown and Company. After being turned down by thirty-one publishers, it won the Edgar Award for Best First Novel. Patterson's 1993 novel, Along Came a Spider, his first book to feature Alex Cross, was also his first New York Times bestseller in fiction.
In 2001, Morgan Freeman starred as Alex Cross in a film adaptation of Along Came a Spider, and Tyler Perry also played the character in the 2012 film Alex Cross. A film adaptation of Patterson's middle-grade novel Middle School: The Worst Years of My Life was released in theaters in October 2016.
James Patterson has donated more than one million books to students, focusing on some of the most under-resourced schools and youth programs in the country. To date, he has donated $7.25 million to school and classroom libraries throughout the United States, and $2.1 million to independent bookstores and employees.
Patterson has recently donated over $35 million to his and his wife's alma maters—the University of Wisconsin, Vanderbilt University, and Manhattan College—and he has established over four hundred Teacher and Writer Education Scholarships at twenty-one colleges and universities throughout the country. Patterson has also donated more than one million books to U.S. soldiers at home and overseas.
In May 2015, Patterson launched a children's book imprint at Little, Brown—JIMMY Patterson—that is unwaveringly focused on one goal: turning kids into lifelong readers. This imprint also provides resources, strategies, and programs to serve teachers, parents, librarians, and booksellers. Patterson invests proceeds from the sales of JIMMY Patterson Books in pro-reading initiatives.
Patterson also founded ReadKiddoRead.com, a website designed to help parents, teachers, and librarians ignite a new generation's excitement for reading. Awarded the National Book Foundation's Innovations in Reading Prize and the American Library Association's Great Websites for Kids, the site features thoughtful book reviews from a variety of genres and age ranges, a large and lively Facebook community, and contributions from other authors.
Patterson's awards for adult and children's literature include the Edgar Award, the International
